Energy drink has taken a hold on Tamale…The drink was introduced a few years ago, but wasn’t really popular with the people. However, energy drink has gained popularity and many people have taken to drinking this beverage. As a result, we receive thousands of yellow and red little bags on a daily basis. Children love these colours and consequently we see few of them on the streets. They have become collector’s items! This is an important stepping stone for Haruna, since he has been promoted from bag collector  to ‘Energy Man’. He proudly cuts hundreds of bags on a daily basis, which are made into beautiful products.

Education

Recently, we have successfully dedicated ourselves into bringing awareness about our school project on litter. The Ghana Education Service has given us permission to start our four-week project at different schools. Through an official document, the headmasters of these schools will be asked to give their full dedication into making our project a success. Tuma-Viela has taken a step closer to its objective.

Overall

We have been awarded another certificate! We have been officially admitted to and registered at the ‘Tamale Metropolitan Assembly’. This should give us better opportunities to expand our work in the main capital of ‘the Northern Region’. We encountered a lot of red-tape, but we are very happy to have been taken seriously and thus recognized!

Information

Once more, a film crew has visited our workplace. We have given interviews and we were able to explain what exactly Tuma-Viela represents. Even now, we are still being contacted by acquaintances from mid- and southern Ghana who saw our report. The response has been immense, since our report has been broadcasted for weeks prior to the news. Unfortunately, we have not been able to watch the report for ourselves, because the new TV-station U-TV has not aired yet in the North. However, the response has been extremely positive!

Products

We welcomed our 25.000th customer this month. This means we produced 25.000 items since we started in 2009! We can't be sure who it was, but it was one of the kids in this big group, who live far from the city centre and who walked for several hours to come to us. They arrived with bags full of sachets and left dressed up beautifully. Tamale is yet a little cleaner and still more kids are environmentally aware!

Campaigning

We disturbed the peace in a nice way one morning during school holidays. Tuma-Viela took to the streets! There were at least a hundred of us, accompanied by a brass band, singing and dancing along. We visited the minister of our region and brought our workshop to his attention. We offered him a beautiful set of our products. We sang a song and invited the minister to pay our workshop a visit - and he promised he would.

Development

For a long period, we have wanted to give each and every one of our employees a chance to achieve their potential and be independent. In this way we have created room for new employees to gain working experience. Latif is our first employee to have successfully finished his education at our project and who is now starting work at a tailor. His love of the sowing-machine has grown throughout the years and he really wants to learn the tools of the trade.

Education

Not only the fathers from Gambia, but also the fathers from Kumasi, the penultimate largest city in Ghana, have shown a great interest in our project. They want to start a workplace similar to the one in Tuma-Viela. It is amazing that more people are joining us and are trying to give people a chance in achieving their potential, in making them aware about the environment and in educating them. All this in order to create beautiful products and stop the massive pollution on this continent!
