Education

On the 5th of December, Tamale partakes in a large national clean-up activity and of course our whole team is present to help clean the streets. We collect sachets and of course give out information to the children curious about our activities!

Rafik, our designer and innovator or all kinds of items is going to take a course at the hospital. This is great news! Of course boys want to succeed if the opportunity is there, who can blame them!? Tuma Viela offered this young man an opportunity. Instead of wandering around aimlessly, he got into a working rhythm and you see what that can lead to!

Education

During the ‘Art and Culture’ days, we have a kiosk on the event grounds. We are just going about our daily business and attract a lot of attention. Many kids us with enthusiasm! We happily interrupt our work to tell anyone who is interested what we are doing and why we are doing it.

Yahaya, our friendly ‘chief cutter’ was hanging around and wanted to work. He did so for months with enormous enthusiasm at our workshop. Then the opportunity arose to go into training and he is now an assistant police officer! We miss him, but are so proud that he has been able to progress in this manner! Where there’s a will there’s a way.

Where at first we only saw eager kids, now we also see adults participating!
A schoolbag isn’t necessary anymore for these men, but their goal is a raincoat!
Convenient for visits to the washroom or the mosque. All around you you now see the men cleaning up the streets when previously they were polluting them.

At times you want to try something else. Kids ask us: “Do you only make schoolbags?” Others come with tips: “why don’t you try this” or “Would this be possible?” Rafik was very creative and thought ideas up on the spot!

After working on Ellen’s doorstep the first few months, it is now a fact: we have our own workshop and the first employees start working with fervor! After having some impermanent help, we now work with a serious team of three boys and four women.

Pollution

The interest in our project is huge... We never dreamt that so many sachets would be turned in! But then again, there are so many out there! They say that every little bit helps but we need a lot of little bits to solve this enormous litter problem....

Thinking back on the first schoolbag we ever made, I doubt it still exists...Much too weak, not sturdy enough. It took us a while to develop the correct prototype. We needed to explore this new and special material: what we could do with it and how to use it to its maximum potential... Then all of a sudden there it was: strong as an ox!

Environmental awareness

I had no idea what would happen when I told every child they could have a schoolbag if they delivered the sachets to me. Everyday my tiny veranda is full of them and I am not quite sure where to start.... The children look at me, proud..expectant... Am I not happy with what they have brought me? So I get behind my table...day after day. The children come to help, the Christmas vacation has started and we are making bags... This is so much fun!
